ORGANIC FORMS AND NATURAL FINISHES

The craft process leaves unpredictable traces on each piece, subtle marks in the clay surface or blemishes in the glaze application – often referred to as ‘potters tears’. These tiny dribs, scuffs or marks during the making are all part of the personality of each piece. Rather than striving for perfection, Katherine allows the process to remain visible, each piece a unique reflection of the hand that made it.

MEMORIES OF THE LAND

Her organic forms are combined with natural slips & glazes, all handmade in her home studio in Hindon.

Working with locally sourced materials, incorporating dug clay from East Knoyle, along with locally ground chalk and wood ash collected from the fireplace to create her distinctive surfaces. While not every glaze contains foraged elements, often due to the time required or limited availability, those that do are clearly labelled.

The raw materials carry the memory of the land from which they originate. Through the process of firing, glazing, and finishing, Katherine seeks to honour these materials & intrinsic qualities, allowing them to transform into something new.

Ceramic artist, Katherine Roper throws, coils and hand-builds forms in response to the land’s natural cycles. Based in Wiltshire her practice is deeply influenced by the landscape around her. Shaped by over twenty years working as a landscape designer, her studio is rooted in her own garden.

Her time surveying and reimagined landscapes, using planting to build texture & colour; drawing inspiration from the natural patterns and forms that define the land translate across into her organic forms. Her sensitivity to light, shape, texture, and composition continues to inform her ceramics, carrying through into every aspect of the making.
